Cacao Pow Deo Bar

Cacao Pow Deo Bar

Cacao Pow Deo Bar’s were developed by Tonya after a considerable battle with eczema under her arms. Aluminium from traditional antiperspirants made her skin flare-up, and when moving to natural deodorants, the essential oils in the deodorants then did the same.

Tonya then spent many months, playing with different formulas until she found the perfect one.

Handmade in London by Tonya, with only 3 ingredients, the least ingredients I have ever known a deodorant to have. These deodorants are solid bars in zero-waste packaging and are perfect for everyday and travel.

So what’s in it? Ingredients 3

Theobroma Cacao* (Cacao Butter), from a Peruvian farming co-operative, EWG 1, Goes from a solid to a melty butter on warming by rubbing into the skin. It is a rich emollient and packed with skin-caring and protective antioxidants. Great for sensitive skin. Also antibacterial. Marine Safe.

Bicarbonate of Soda, EWG 1-  is a salt. It is a white crystalline solid but often appears as a powder. It is a component of the mineral natron and is found dissolved in many mineral springs. It comes from the USA, and it is estimated that this deposit has enough to last us another 2000 years at the current rate of use. Used in deodorant as a powerful antibacterial and helps to prevent infections. By eradicating underarm bacteria, it prevents body odour from forming. Marine Safe.

Zinc Oxide EWG 2 – soothing skin irritation, it’s a non-comedogenic (it won’t clog your pores and contribute to acne), it’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory. It has been shown to improve elasticity in the skin, which enhances the appearance of wrinkles.

*Organic Ingredient

Ingredients thoughts: I have not come across a deodorant with so few ingredients in. Each element has a definite purpose with no extras. To apply (cocoa butter), to deodorize (Sodium Bicarbonate) and to soothe (Zinc Oxide). The Cocoa butter is organic and sourced directly from a co-operative. The Zinc-oxide is Non-nano. So full mark’s for the ingredient sourcing and application!

Directions for use:

For best results create a paste in the palm of your hand ‪- 20 rotations turns the end of the bar into a paste.‬ Or apply directly to a clean, warm, dry armpit. Always work the product into the armpit until completely absorbed.

Packaging – Glass jar, with a metal lid. Bar wrapped in paper. All recyclable or you can return it directly to be reused and gain free postage on your next bar.

Awards and accreditations – None yet, though this is a young product.

My Review: I was excited to try this and also a bit concerned as I really wanted this to work for me, but also knew that possibly the sodium Bicarbonate might be a problem for my skin.

My skin can take a little sodium Bicarbonate, but as the sodium Bicarbonate was listed 2nd in the ingredients list, I thought that it might be too much in for my skin. The Cacao Pow Deo Bar is a solid bar that smells a little like chocolate and looks a warm cream colour, both of which come from the cocoa butter. The bar comes wrapped in paper and in a glass jar, It stays a solid bar so you could take it in another container for travel. It can feel a bit rough to apply to start with, this is just from the edges of where it has been moulded. I just rolled around in my hand to warm a little and to roll off the rough edges., before applying under my arms.

I used the bar for about a week. I found that I was as dry as could be under my arms, it almost felt like I was using an antiperspirant, I was totally confident that there was no sweat or odour. It was totally different from other natural deodorants like pastes or balms that I have used as I felt totally dry from the beginning. I would not worry about drying under my arms before putting my clothes on.

I was right about my concerns though, after about a week of use, I started to feel a little sensitive under my arms, therefore, I discontinued use.

My husband does continue to use it, though, and he really likes it.

We/he has been using it for about 2 months now, and there is still loads left. I have heard reports of people claiming that the bar lasts 6 months for £15. I think it is excellent value!

It is perfect for travel as it is solid and not a liquid, so I was pleased to see that Tonya will be bringing out a small travel version shortly. Note that cocoa butter has a melting point of 34 degrees C, not a problem on holiday in an air-conditioned hotel, but maybe an issue if backpacking around Australia! Therefore you are advised to keep in a cool dark place. I would also note that coconut oil has a melting point of 24 degrees C, so potentially this deodorant bar may deal with heat better than a deodorant made with coconut oil.

What I like:

  • Only 3 ingredients
  • Well, thought out ingredients -Organic & consciously traded Cocoa Butter & Non-Nano Zinc Oxide.
  • Lasts for ages.
  • A solid so can travel.
  • Works really well.
  • The scent.

What I did not like:

  • That I was sensitive to it, due to the level of Sodium Bicarbonate.

*This deodorant was paid for by myself and as always I have written an honest review.

In Conclusion:
