- There is no reason to buy a traditional single-use plastic toothbrush. I think they should be banned just like straws and cotton buds. The plastic use is totally unnecessary. If you use a manual toothbrush you can choose from using bamboo with heads made from 63% Castor Oil and Nylon 6 (FETE £3.99) or FSC Beech with Nylon 6 heads that are recyclable by sending back to Georganics. (Georganics £4.40). Both sustainable and ethical as each other depending on your belief’s.
2. Toothpaste – Natural toothpaste is different from toothpaste in a tube, it has a different texture and if you use the charcoal it can have a very different taste. I was surprised how much I liked the charcoal, once I had got used to it! Georganic toothpaste is in a glass jar with metal lid & paper lid insert. It comes with a bamboo spatula, that I will have to hands up say I have never used. I am one of those naughty ones that dips her toothbrush directly into the paste (Georganic’s would probably not approve of this as it introduces bacteria into the paste) but as it is for me I will take the risk.
I decant into an aluminium jar for travel.
3. As well as the plastic bottle, mouthwash is heavy to transport as it is a liquid. Georganics Mouthwash tablets, remove the liquid and just give you the concentrsted tablet which you just pop into 20ml of water before use. 180 tablets is equivilent to 3600mls of mouthwash.
4. Tooth floss is hard to find that is totally plastic free & vegan (no beeswax). Bambaw tooth floss is made from candelilla wax & PLA which is a bioplastic made from cornstarch. Biodegradable in industrial compost, such as council collections, but not home compost. You can buy refills for the stainless steel container and the container is recyclable at the end of its life.
PLA is considered safe to use with food, therefore I presume safe to use in your mouth.
One thing you may have noticed is that to buy natural plastic-free dental care is to spend more money than you normally would than if you were picking it up from the supermarket. This is due to the quality ingredients & ethical practices of the brands.
To cut down on the cost I suggest you buy in bulk when you can. On Wild Earth Beauty we offer bulk discounts on our dental and deodorant collections.
